How To Survive In Minecraft

So you started a new world. The first thing you want to do is pick a good building site for your little slice of heaven in a dark and dangerous world. Don't take too long or you're in for a rough night. There should be trees available nearby and preferable some water, exposed ore, and maybe even an npc village. The village makes things much easier, but I'm going to assume you haven't found one.

The first material you'll need is wood. Go to the nearest tree and start punching! When you have a decent amount of wood, go to your inventory and break it into planks. Use 4 planks to build a workbench, and turn some of your wood into sticks by crafting with one on top of the other. Using the crafting bench you can now make tools. You can take some time to figure them all out or use an online guide. Most start with a stick in the center and center-bottom.

Using your planks (or dirt you dug up with a shovel) you should get right to work on building your first shelter. if there's some sheep nearby, kill three and craft a bed using three planks on the bottom, and three wool in the middle. A bed can get you to morning where it's a lot safer to go outside. Next night, try and set up some torches (stick on the bottom with a coal/charcoal right above).

Now it's time to start mining! Make yourself a pickaxe and start digging down (don't actually dig straight down, there's pools of lava you could fall into). Relatively quickly, you'll want to start making your tools out of better materials. After wood comes cobblestone (mined stone), iron(iron ore smelted in a furnace), than diamond. You can also use gold but it would be a waste. Also consider making some armor pieces out of the metals and leather you get from killing cows.

If you're not already starving, you'll have to go out and kill something for food. Don't overdo it though! You might want to keep animals around to breed as a constant food source. You can do this by luring them into a closed off area(or not), then feeding them their food of choice (honestly, I forgot, but it's wheat for cows and sheep). You will want to start a farm, which can be done with a hoe and seeds you get from taking out tall grass. There are other(rarer) things that you can grow as well if you can get your hands on the seeds.

And there you have it! Everything you need to know to survive in minecraft. Personally I think this game is a huge, huge time sink and I stay away from it like I would crack, but you're free to do whatever you like
